A project conceived by Upasana and hosted by Tranquebar Craft Resource Centre, TCRC, was held in Tranquebar from the 26th to 31st July 2010.  Organic cotton stoles from Madurai were embroidered by twenty local women.  Upasana, Auroville, developed organic cotton products, under the brand name Paruthi which promotes environmentally sound practices and supports local farming communities in the Madurai region. By teaching the women of Tranquebar simple embroidery skills, this far-reaching project is able to create still more livelihood opportunities. Along with embroidery, the women were taught leadership skills and good business practices.  After the initial workshop, eight women expressed an interest in this type of work, and they will receive a further six months of support and training.
